When starting out in silver / goldsmithing you want to use the round shapes first ...and I do recommend to use larger stones, the ones you can handle with your hands as opposed to small stones that need careful handling with tools.

The benefit of using round circular shapes is the fact that you can use your round mandrels to shape the settings accurately round...with other shapes, especially Free-Form stones you do not have that option...

The next type of shape to attempt could be a square shape...they are not as difficult as it may seem and the same applies to the Teardrop shapes.

In terms of types of gemstones I recommend to work with harder materials like Agate, Aventurine, Carnelian or Onxy ...Turquoise is a much softer stone however I have it listed below because it always works so well with Silver...

Just make sure you do not scratch them with your files...but you know that already....   

It applies to all gemstones!
